The city even thou being ransacked by the enemies, they definitely left some of the old debris and memories in the city of Ayuttaya. It is worth going on a day trip as most of the ruins and temples can be completed in a day, a ride of two hours will get you there.
The beauty of the old city is as thou as they are telling a story by itself.

You can actually rent a bicycle to cycle around the city, not that difficult to navigate around the city. Most places are directed by signboard. Provided you are looking for particular monks for blessing.
Other than the ruins temples, Ayutthaya is also famous for many geji old monks that are still living and blessing the locals
You can take a bus or rent a vehicle if you can drive, there is a summer palace called Bang Pa In summer palace where the royalties will patronize during summer period. It is open to the public and many locals will come and take pictures here too.
